To provide development and deploymentflexibility, the 9U SKYbolt II is based on the same modular architecturethat powers every member of the SKYbolt II product family. Data istransferred throughout the SKYbolt II motherboard by the SKYchannelPacket Bus, capable of moving information at 320 MB/sec. System controlis handled by the System Processor, which performs the I/O and operatingsystem tasks that would otherwise burden the compute processors. Themain computation engine is a Shamrock II132 daughtercard containing fourIntel i860132 processors, complete with local memory that can be shareduniformly by all the processors on the same daughtercard. A full VME 64interface provides communication to the host and other off-boardcommunication. High-speed off-board communication is provided by the VITAstandard SKYchannel Backplane connection, which uses the VME P2 pins tocommunicate between boards. The 9U SKYbolt II includes a built-inSKYburst132 160 interface linked directly into the SKYchannel on-boardbus. This built-in SKYburst 160 provides a parallel I/O interfacewithout sacrificing any of the compute processors.
